Ntanzi represented by same lawyer in other cases, court hears.

Court documents have revealed that one of Senzo Meyiwa’s alleged killers was represented multiple times by the lawyer, whom he has denied in court.

This is according to witness metro police officer Vus’umuzi Mogane, who began his testimony testified on Thursday.

Mogane was at the forefront of arresting Bongani Ntanzi in June 2020 for other crimes, including a murder case in Nongoma and a drug-related case.

According to Mogane, Ntanzi was wanted for a murder case in Nongoma in KZN that involved a gun, as well as a Vosloorus case which involved drugs.

Mogane told the court Ntanzi was wanted for another Vosloorus case not linked to the Meyiwa murder, and a murder case in Nongoma.

“As we were looking for him we discovered that there were certain cases that he was involved in apart from this one.

“Since he had many cases, there was a big case that was in Nongoma. And there was another case in Vosloorus but not this one.”

He was arrested on 16 June at his Phokeng home in Rustenburg.

Ntanzi and four other men stand accused of the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.

The name Dominic Mjiyako first came up during testimony by Magistrate Vivian Cronje, who took Ntanzi’s confession statement in June 2020 at the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

Ntanzi’s lawyer, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, told the court that his client did not know Mjiyako and was not legally represented at the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

This is despite at least five witnesses, including police officers, testifying that Ntanzi stood with a man in a suit on the day, believed to be his lawyer.

On Thursday, Mjiyako’s name popped up again, this time as Ntanzi’s lawyer at the Tlhabane Magistrates Court in Rustenburg, where he stood accused of illegal possession of ammunition.

A trial within a trial is currently underway in the Pretoria High Court, where the admissibility of alleged confessions made by accused one Muzi Sibiya and Ntanzi is being argued.

The defence has argued that Sibiya and Ntanzi were both coerced and assaulted into admitting the details of Meyiwa’s murder.
