The HollywoodBets Sharks suffered a double blow in a 21-17 defeat to the Ospreys in their United Rugby Championship (URC) Round 15 clash in Bridgend.
Both sides crossed the whitewash three times, but it was the boot of Dan Edwards that proved decisive, with the Ospreys flyhalf slotting three conversions to separate the teams.
The visitors’ problems began before kick-off, losing Jurenzo Julius just hours before the match.
Matters worsened during the game when Ethan Hooker was forced off at half-time after dislocating his shoulder while scoring. The Springbok centre was injured when Kieran Hardy landed on him in the act of grounding the ball.
With more than 20 players already sidelined, the injury will be a major concern for the Sharks.
The Sharks made an assertive start, dominating the early exchanges and pinning the Ospreys deep inside their own half. Despite sustained pressure, the hosts held firm, absorbing wave after wave of attack, and after 10 minutes the scoreboard remained untouched.
The Sharks struggled with the aerial battle, and their inability to deal with the high ball soon proved costly. The Ospreys struck first through Dan Edwards, whose clever chip kick sparked a sweeping move. The visitors strung together two sharp offloads before Edwards himself finished off the move, diving over for the opening try and adding the conversion for a 7–0 lead.
The Sharks responded in typical fashion, turning to their forward power. A well-executed driving maul saw Phepsi Buthelezi crash over the line to get his side on the board. Jean Smith was unable to convert, leaving the deficit at two points.
Up front, the Sharks pack continued to graft, earning another maul opportunity soon after. But this time they failed to capitalise, losing possession.
The Ospreys remained a threat whenever they had the ball. A slick offload from Daniel Kasende released Evardi Boshoff, who tore through the defensive line with a powerful run, though the visitors ultimately lost structure inside the Sharks’ 22.
Their persistence paid off moments later. From a well-organised driving maul, flank Jac Morgan peeled off the back to score, with Edwards adding the extras to stretch the lead to 14–5.
The Sharks turned to their bench early, with Fez Mbatha replaced by Eduan Swart in the 33rd minute, as they looked to regain momentum. They came close to striking again before the break, but the Ospreys’ outstanding work at the breakdown repeatedly disrupted their attacking rhythm.
Yet the final say of the half belonged to the Sharks. Vincent Tshituka reacted quickest to a loose ball, popping it up for Ethan Hooker, who raced clear to score. Smith made no mistake with the conversion, cutting the deficit to just two points heading into the interval.
However, the try came at a cost, with Hooker forced off injured and replaced by Siya Masuku for the second half.
Despite the setback, the Sharks dominated possession after the interval. But it was the Ospreys who struck first. Kasende intercepted before sending replacement Garyn Phillips over for his first try of the season, with Edwards converting for a 21-12 lead.
Smith threatened with a strong individual run but was knocked on near the line, while further opportunities went begging, including from an uncontested scrum.
The Sharks eventually closed the gap through another powerful maul, with Buthelezi grabbing his second try of the match. However, they were unable to find the decisive score in the closing stages, slipping to a narrow defeat.
