The Patriotic Alliance (PA) cleared its deputy president Kenny Kunene of any wrongdoing over links to murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe.
An internal investigation was launched by the party to investigate Kunene’s involvement with Molefe.
Molefe was arrested for orchestrating Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka’s murder in 2022, and he was also on R100 000 bail for another murder case at the time of his arrest.
He was denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court last month on the allegations murder charges against the popular musician.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff ruled that Molefe had failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances to justify his release.
He remains in custody and was due back in court on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
Kunene agreed to “cooperate with an investigation” and stepped aside from his political role in the party until he is cleared of the allegations.
PA leader Gayton McKenzie made the announcement during a Facebook Live broadcast this evening, where he was giving his party members updates on several issues including Kunene’s saga.
McKenzie said the report from the investigators will be made public.
The PA appointed law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr to lead the investigation into Kunene’s conduct.
“The DP has been found that his story checks out. Liam (Jacobs) will resign tonight as a councillor because he is moving straight to Cape Town. He’s gonna live in Cape Town full-time because he has to travel around the country.
“To the DP, you have shown absolute leadership. When you were asked to step down from being an MMC, you asked me if you must also step down as a councillor, and I said yes. You never went out to badmouth the party. I want to say our DP is back,” McKenzie said.
The latter tendered his resignation as Proportional Representation Councillor and transport MMC in the city of Johannesburg with immediate effect.
McKenzie previously announced that the party resolved Kunene would be its mayoral candidate in Johannesburg despite his suspension.
“He has done very good work in the City of Joburg, and the DP [deputy president] will be our mayoral candidate for Joburg. We insist on that as he was a councillor. We will discuss with him that position, but the DP, we want his case to finish, “McKenzie said at that time.
Johannesburg continues to face mounting transport and infrastructure challenges, including widespread potholes and deteriorating roads.
