Pan Macmillan and Picador Africa wins at The 2022 HSS Awards.

Last night the National Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences (NiHSS) hosted the 7th Humanities and Social Sciences Awards. The awards are open to South African publishers, scholars based in South African universities and independent artists linked to universities.

Pan Macmillan and Picador Africa were announced the award-winning titles in three categories:

Best Non-Fiction: Biography

  • Scatterling of Africa: My Early Years by Johnny Clegg (Pan Macmillan South Africa)

This is Johnny Clegg’s origin story, as he wrote it and wanted it told. It is the story of how he came to realise that identity can be a choice, and home is a place you leave and return to as surely as the seasons change.

Best Fiction: Novel

  • They Got To You Too by Futhi Ntshingila (Picador Africa)

The book explores how lockdown created unlikely connections – like that of her protagonists, an ageing Apartheid police general and his nurse, the daughter of SA struggle activists.

  • The Lost Language of the Soul by Mandla Langa (Picador Africa)

The novel captures the perspective of a vulnerable yet determined child and the clashing emotions within him as he seeks to reunite his family.

In a statement Pan Macmillan said they are delighted to have published these remarkable authors and grateful for the acknowledgement of their excellence by the NiHSS awards. The three books examine what it means to be a South African and the unique tensions and experiences that the country offers.

These awards serves as a crucial platform for unearthing new voices and finding South African stories that cast a light on us as a nation. We send our congratulations to all the winners of all the categories for these important awards, concluded the statement.
