MEC for economic development, tourism and environmental affairs (EDTA) Ravi Pillay has tendered his resignation.
Pillay, who’s headed the KZN portfolio in outgoing premier Sihle Zikalala’s cabinet, hasn’t gone into much detail about his departure, only saying it comes after discussions with the ANC.
He also resigned as a member of the provincial legislature.
Pillay thanked the province for the resilience shown in the face of challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, the July 2021 unrest and this year’s floods.
His departure from government comes shortly after Zikalala’s resignation, leaving two vacancies in the executive.
Pillay resignation will be tabled on Wednesday at the legislature sitting where premier designate Nomusa Dube-Ncube is expected to be voted in.
He was the first Speaker of the Hibiscus Coast Municipality before becoming the Speaker of the Ugu District Municipality. In 2009 he was elected to the Provincial Parliament and served as Chief Whip of the ANC until 2011 when he was appointed MEC for two major departments – Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu.
Pillay is a widely recognized and respected leadership figure in KwaZulu Natal, generating much admiration for his principled approach to the most complex current challenges and his deep commitment to furthering the ideals of the Freedom Charter.
