Orlando Pirates thumped minnows Disciples FC 4-0 on Friday night at Orlando Stadium to advance to the first round of the CAF Champions League.
Pirates had to put up a class act tonight after returning from the first leg at a neutral Mauritius with their tails between their legs after a 0-0 draw.
Just nine minutes into the game, the hosts took the lead thanks to an own goal by Andoniana Andrianavalanova. The Buccaneers seized control early, and it didn’t take long for them to strike again. Relebohile Mofokeng finished off a slick one-two with Patrick Maswanganyi to double the lead.
Then, on the 29th minute, Maswanganyi stole the spotlight, curling a stunning long-range shot into the top corner, making it 3-0 and leaving the crowd buzzing.
In the second half, the Buccaneers continued to push for more goals as their opponents were reduced to mere spectators.
The South African outfit came close severally, but they lacked the composure to extend their already impressive scoreline.
In the 71st minute, Monnapule Saleng thought he had made it 4-0 but his celebrations were cut short by the assistant referee’s offside flag. Substitute Karim Kimvuidi was not to be denied in the stoppages after getting a gift from 12 yards out.
Eventually, Pirates managed to get a deserved win to seal their place in the second preliminary round of the prestigious continental club competition. They will face the winner between Jwaneng Galaxy and Namibian Premier League champions African Stars – who face off tomorrow afternoon.
