SA Police Services (SAPS) arrested three more suspects, bringing the total to five, linked to the murder of a JMPD officer Matome Mokoena, who was shot dead while on duty on Wednesday in Vlakfontein.
Mokoena and his colleague were responding to a reported robbery in Vlakfontein and received a description of a suspect vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo.
After locating the vehicle they stopped it and Mokoena approached the driver’s side, where he was met with gunfire from inside the car.
It has been reported that the same gunmen are believed to have killed another person on the same night in the area.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said the trio arrested yesterday, 17 May in Dobsonville, Soweto are aged between 20 and 35.
She said a multi-disciplinary team led by the Vaal Rand and Pretoria-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Hawks units traced the trio to a residence in Dobsonville.
All five suspects will appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 May, on charges of murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as defeating the ends of justice.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa applauded the relentless efforts of the multi-disciplinary team in ensuring those who are attacking law enforcement agents are brought to book.
