A foreign police officer is expected to appear in the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court in North West on Wednesday 8 February 2023. This follows after the cop was arrested with two other suspects in Mahikeng for dealing in uncut diamonds.
The three foreign nationals appeared in court on Tuesday 7 February 2023. However, the charges were dropped against two of the accused.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso, said the third suspect – the officer – remained in custody and continues to face charges.
Rikhotso said the suspects were arrested in Mahikeng on Monday 6 February 2023 during a buy-and-bust operation after they allegedly sold uncut diamonds worth R100 000. The diamonds and vehicles used during the crime have been seized for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Rikhotso said the reason behind the charges being dropped cannot be disclosed as of yet. It might affect the case whilst investigations still continue.
