KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police are investigating charges of murder after Prince Mbongiseni Milton Muntukaphiwana Zulu, a close confidant and associate of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, who was shot and killed.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker on Friday said Nongoma SAPS were investigating the Thursday evening shooting.
“It is alleged that on Thursday, around 18:00, two people aged 63 and 33 were shot and killed at Nongoma. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive is still unknown.”
The incident comes after Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s coronation last month.
The coronation was the King’s official recognition by President Cyril Ramaphosa that signified his legitimacy as the reigning monarch of the AmaZulu.
The monarch was given his certificate of recognition by Ramaphosa, in front of thousands of his subjects at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
This is the second incident in which someone close to King Misuzulu was killed.
In September, a senior member of the Usuthu Traditional Council, and close confidant of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini, was also assassinated.
Dr Dumisani Blasius Khumalo was shot dead shortly after attending the reed dance in Nongoma.
No arrest has been made for Khumalo’s arrest and his family is still demanding justice.
A month later, a headman (Induna) of the Osuthu area (where most palaces are located), Cuphisa Ntuli was gunned down in the town of Nongoma.
