Prev Reddy turns cultural silence into comedy in brilliant new book.

By Lehlohonolo Lehana.

Pan Macmillan South Africa announced the publication of Qualified Disappointment, the highly anticipated debut memoir by award-winning comedian, actor and digital creator Prev Reddy.

The book marks a profound milestone for the performer, adapting the raw, vulnerable and theatrical DNA of his internationally acclaimed one-man show into an unforgettable coming-of-age story.

At the heart of this moving narrative is Reddy himself – a glitter-loving child from Durban who grew up to become an internationally recognised social media star and stage performer. Known for his viral sketches exploring identity, queerness and cultural contradictions with immense heart and humour, Reddy introduces readers to the real person behind the internet-famous persona.

Hovering over his journey is his famous alter-ego, Aunty Shamilla. She is the opinionated, watchful voice of community judgement and unsolicited advice who served as his creative breakthrough, allowing him to turn years of past rejections into undeniable live-stage success.

Growing up queer, brown and ambitious in a conservative South African Indian household came with strict rules, rigid expectations and a silence regarding anything deemed taboo.

To survive a world obsessed with appearances, Reddy learned early how to perform, deflect and entertain his way through the pervasive fear of becoming a disappointment.

Qualified Disappointment details this internal turmoil, charting how he navigated colourism, difficult high school dynamics, community taboos and an entertainment industry that sometimes attempted to reduce his identity to a stereotypical cultural punchline.

Speaking on his experience of bringing these deeply personal stories to print, Reddy shares: “This memoir is a coming of age story, but not the kind where everything makes sense by the final page and everyone hugs it out over tea. It’s about growing up queer and Indian in South Africa, which sometimes felt like trying to tune three different radios at once and still missing the station entirely. At its core, this book is about finding the courage to listen to your own voice, even when it whispers instead of shouts and about accepting the truth of who you are, even when it would be easier not to.”

Deeply honest and unapologetically bold, Qualified Disappointment is an essential read for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider in their own home and fought to stay soft, funny and powerful anyway.
