Premier Soccer League (PSL) has charged Cape Town City for signing a sponsorship deal with First National Bank (FNB) without obtaining approval from the league.
This was confirmed by PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu in his update on the league’s pending disciplinary matters.
Majavu said through a recording shared via the PSL media channel on Tuesday evening: City stands charged for failure to obtain prior approval from the PSL executive committee in accordance with the compliance manual, prior to the conclusion of a new or an amended sponsorship agreement with a particular bank.
“In accordance with the rules, they ought to have sought and obtained approval prior to concluding the agreement.
“In this instance, the allegations against them is that they did it the other way round. They concluded the agreement, and once that agreement was concluded and effective, only then did they seek to approach the executive committee of the league for approval. They will appear before the DC on August 29 at 6.30pm in the evening.”
The PSL did not approve City’s title sponsor on the grounds that the deal conflicted with the league’s national cup competition sponsor, Nedbank.
In another disciplinary matter, Swallows FC have been hauled to appear before the PSL DC on Thursday.
“They stand charged of delaying the commencement of their fixture against Cape Town City [a week ago] and also amending their team sheet without notifying the opposing team, as well as the match officials as prescribed in terms of the rules,” explained Majavu.
“They will appear [before the PSL DC] this coming Thursday at 4.30pm in the afternoon.”
