President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a eulogy at the state memorial service for the late former apartheid president Frederik Willem de Klerk on Sunday.
The memorial service will be live-streamed on government digital platforms for citizens to watch.
De Klerk died on November 11, in Fresnaye, Cape Town, after his long battle with mesothelioma cancer.
He was laid to rest on November 21 in a private ceremony.
He served as Deputy President under former President Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1996, having played a role in South Africa’s transition to democracy in the 1990s.
Government announced on Wednesday that it will host a state memorial service for de Klerk.
The event will be held at the Groote Kerk in Cape Town on Sunday.
De Klerk’s role in ending apartheid and during the transition to democracy has been the subject of fierce debate since the news of his passing.
Ramaphosa says he played a vital role in South Africa’s transition to democracy in the 1990s.
The Presidency says attendees to the memorial service will be limited to accredited persons only due to prevailing Covid-19 regulations.
NatJOINTS said since the death of De Klerk, It has been meeting regularly in preparation for the service.
“The NatJOINTS has assessed the state of readiness and preparedness of all law enforcement agencies and is satisfied with the plans, which include security plans, route security, and access control of all the relevant departments,” said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe.
