Nearly a decade after their last South African appearance, American rock heavyweights LIVE are coming back, thanks to AMP Events.
This December, the band behind some of alternative rock’s most enduring anthems will return to South Africa for four highly anticipated performances, bringing with them a catalogue that has defined generations of listeners and a live show built around songs that still have the power to turn an audience into one enormous choir.
LIVE will perform at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town on 8 and 9 December 2026, followed by a show at SunBet Arena at Time Square on 11 and 12 December.
For South African fans, the Pretoria performance carries an extra layer of significance. LIVE were the first international act to perform at SunBet Arena when the venue opened in 2017, making their return a fitting full circle moment.
And this is a band with history in South Africa.
LIVE have visited the country several times over the decades and have built a particularly passionate following here, with their music resonating with audiences in much the same way it has across Europe, Australia and the United States.
Their last visit in 2017 was met with packed venues and a huge sing along. A planned return for the Throwing Copper anniversary tour in 2020, postponed to 2021 was ultimately derailed by the Covid pandemic, leaving fans waiting even longer for the band to make its way back.
Now, that wait is almost over. The songs that defined a generation
Few albums better capture the sound and spirit of 1990s alternative rock than Throwing Copper.
Released in 1994, the record transformed LIVE from a respected alternative act into an international rock phenomenon. It went on to sell more than eight million copies in the United States, while the band has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide.
Its songs remain instantly recognisable.
Lightning Crashes. I Alone. All Over You. Iris and Selling the Drama. These are not simply tracks from another era. They have become part of the collective soundtrack of a generation.
For frontman Ed Kowalczyk, the enduring connection between LIVE’s music and its audience is something he continues to find remarkable.
Looking back on Throwing Copper decades after its release, Kowalczyk has spoken about the strange and rewarding experience of watching songs written in his youth take on new meaning for older audiences.
He has also reflected on the continued relevance of LIVE’s more socially conscious material, particularly songs dealing with identity, division and the human search for meaning.
That timeless quality has always been part of LIVE’s appeal.
Kowalczyk’s lyrics, influenced in part by the philosophical writings of Jiddu Krishnamurti, helped give the band a distinctive voice. There was always something searching and spiritual beneath the guitar driven rock: questions about who we are, how we relate to one another and where we fit in the world.
That combination of muscular rock and introspection helped LIVE stand apart from many of their contemporaries.
A band with more to say
While nostalgia will undoubtedly be a major part of the December shows, this is not simply a heritage act replaying its greatest hits.
LIVE have continued creating and performing, and Kowalczyk has indicated through his social media that the band is currently working on new music, including “multiple albums and other projects”.
The current touring line- up features Kowalczyk alongside Zak Loy on lead guitar and backing vocals, Chris Heerlein on bass, Johnny Radelat on drums and Nick Jay on keyboards.
Kowalczyk has also described the band’s current chapter as being less about chasing the ambitions of their younger selves and more about appreciating what it means to be a band.
After years of touring and the evolution of the music industry, that perspective appears to have injected a fresh energy into LIVE.
The result is a group that knows exactly what its audience came to hear, while still looking forward.
Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch performance promises to be particularly special. On 8 and 9 December, LIVE will take to the lawns of one of the country’s most spectacular outdoor venues, with Table Mountain providing the backdrop as the band delivers its catalogue beneath the summer night sky.
Two days later, the atmosphere shifts to Pretoria and the SunBet Arena, where the band will return to the very stage on which it made history as the venue’s first international act.
It is difficult to imagine a more appropriate setting for their South African comeback.
For longtime fans, it will be a chance to revisit songs that have followed them through decades of their lives.
For younger audiences discovering LIVE for the first time, it is an opportunity to experience one of alternative rock’s defining bands exactly where its music has always belonged: on stage, in front of a crowd.
After almost a decade away, LIVE are coming back to South Africa. And this time, the wait is finally over. Exactly three months to go before they perform in the Republic.
