Dstv premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have announced that goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has extended his contract with the club until 2028.
The club has announced that Williams’ contract has been extended, just a day after they clinched their seventh consecutive Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are delighted to announce that goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has signed a contract extension until 2028,” a club statement read.
Since joining Sundowns almost two years ago, the shot-stopper has been instrumental in the team’s success, featuring in 69 games across all competitions and lifting three trophies.
In spite of his modesty, during his maiden season at the Tshwane giants, Williams stood tall and stepped up his game. He emerged a more complete soccer player than when he joined. His starting of the Brazilians’ attacking moves was commonplace and a key part of the team’s build-up play.
These displays got him nominated for the PSL Player of the Season gong – though winning it proved a bit tougher.
Since the inception of the PSL in 1996, only two goalkeepers have received the honour – Andre Arendse of Santos in 2002 and Kaizer Chiefs’ Itumeleng Khune, who got it 10 years ago.
