Live from SunBet Arena, Pretoria: Yesterday’s first full day of main-draw action at the Premier Padel Pretoria P1 delivered a cascade of completed matches across Centre Court and the outer courts, with the Round of 32 producing the expected mix of clinical wins, three-set battles and the occasional surprise that keeps a new tournament feeling alive.
On Centre Court, Navarro and Di Nenno needed little more than 50 minutes to dismiss Diestro and Sintes Villalonga 6-2, 6-1. Shortly afterwards, Gonzalez and Campagnolo required nearly two hours and a deciding set to see off Ruiz Gonzalez and Pineda Cabello 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The top half of the draw continued to assert itself when Galán and Chingotto, the third seeds, overcame Sanchez Aguero and Rubini 6-2, 7-6 in just over an hour.
Further down the order the results kept coming: Ruiz Granados and García beat Gala and Jensen Sirvent 6-2, 6-3; Garrido and Bergamini rolled past Ruiz and Ortega 6-2, 6-1; Arroyo and Jiménez Casas saw off Fernández and Vilariño Gestoso 6-4, 6-3; and Bautista and Jofre survived a long three-setter against Sanchez Blasco and Santigosa Sastre 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Montiel Caruso and Abbate closed out Quilez and Mouriño 6-3, 6-4, while Tello and Arce Simo completed the day’s results with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Perino and Domínguez.
By the end of play, the Round of 32 had largely sorted itself into the expected hierarchy. The established Spanish and Argentine pairings moved through with the authority that comes from years spent on the professional circuit. Matches that stretched beyond an hour and a half were the exception rather than the rule; most were decided inside 70 minutes.
The scores reflected what the Pretoria crowd is beginning to understand. Padel may share familiar strokes with tennis, but at this level it becomes a different game entirely. The use of glass, the angles, court positioning, anticipation and decision-making are all learned through thousands of hours on tour. Experience still outweighs enthusiasm, and the early rounds in Pretoria have shown that distinction once again.
Attention now turns to this evening’s Centre Court programme, which begins around 17:00. First up is the clash between Inigo Jofre (UAE) and Jairo Bautista (ESP) against the third-seeded pair of Leandro Roman Augsburger (ARG) and Juan Lebron (ESP).
That match will be followed by Jose Jimenez Casas and Alejandro Arroyo of Spain against compatriots Manuel Castaño and Enrique Goenaga. The night session closes with the headline encounter: world number ones Agustin Tapia (ARG) and Arturo Coello (ESP) taking on Eduardo Alonso and Aimar Goñi Lacabe of Spain.
