A delegation of nine young South African scientists represented the country at the 10th BRICS Young Scientists’ Forum (YSF), taking place in Brasilia, Brazil, from 15 to 17 September 2025.
The delegates were selected through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) from a highly competitive field of 256 applications submitted by over 46 institutions across South Africa.
The BRICS YSF was first established following a consensus reached at the 2nd BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Ministerial Meeting, held in Brasilia in March 2015. The forum has since gained significant traction and is now hosted annually by the nation holding the BRICS presidency.
The 2025 BRICS Foum was focused on addressing critical global challenges through three key thematic areas:
- Research on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Contributing perspectives from BRICS nations towards the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30).
- Science Diplomacy in a Changing World: Showcasing the views of BRICS and the Global South on the international stage.
- Artificial Intelligence for Societal Solutions. Exploring how emerging technologies can enhance the lives of citizens within BRICS countries.
The BRICS YSF is a premier platform for expanding scientific cooperation among young researchers and scientists from member countries. It seeks to promote initiatives and build a robust system of international collaboration among the next generation of STI leaders. These efforts are crucial for ensuring the sustainable development of BRICS cooperation and consolidating its leadership in global STI.
The South African delegation comprises:

The delegation was chaperoned by Dr Tebogo Mabotha from ASSAf. The Forum aims to provide young scientists with opportunities to share their experiences, discuss incentives and constraints, and explore opportunities in education, research, and entrepreneurship within science and engineering.
It plays a pivotal role in cultivating a cohort of innovative thinkers prepared to drive progress in their fields and contribute to the broader advancement of knowledge and society.
