The top flight local athletics season will get underway on 28 January 2023 when the country’s top race walkers turn out in the battle for national road titles in Cape Town.
Bringing athletes together in various age groups to compete over a range of distances, the ASA 35km Race Walking Championships and Open International 35km, 20km and 10km Events will be held at Youngsfield Military Base.
The programme features a senior 35km race, which will see national champions being crowned over the longest official distance in the race walking discipline.
The 35km event will also be open to international athletes, which is expected to raise the standard and provide more elite competition for South Africa’s own stars.
In addition, open races will be held for men and women over the 20km and 10km distances.
“We are delighted to be taking this annual event back to Youngsfield Military Base next month, where Western Province Athletics successfully hosted last year’s event,” said Athletics South Africa President, James Moloi.
“Creating opportunities for race walkers to shine at domestic level, we expect this event to attract the country’s top athletes once again, and we wish all participants well in their preparation.”
