SA theatre legend Dr John Kani honoured with prestigious Order of the British Empire.

South Africa beams with pride as Dr John Kani, the nation’s esteemed actor, director, and author, is honoured with the prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) by His Majesty King Charles III.

The accolade, awarded for his “services to drama,” recognises Dr Kani’s extraordinary contributions to the arts both in South Africa and internationally.

Dr Kani is celebrated for his roles as T’Chaka in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther, Rafiki in The Lion King, and Colonel Ulenga in the Netflix films Murder Mystery and Murder Mystery 2.

The OBE is one of the UK’s most esteemed honours, recognising individuals for their outstanding achievements and service across various fields, including the arts, sciences, charitable work, and public service. 

For Dr Kani, the recognition underscores his lifelong dedication to the arts and his unwavering pursuit of cultural expression through drama.

Government spokeswoman Nomonde Mnukwa praised Dr Kani’s remarkable work.

“Dr Kani’s OBE award is a testament to his remarkable talent and the significant impact he has made in drama and theatre. It’s also a celebration of Mzansi’s excellence on the global stage. Over his decades-spanning career, Dr Kani has not only shaped the landscape of South African theatre but also brought the richness of South Africa’s cultural heritage to the world,” Mnukwa said.

His honour serves as a reminder of the power of the arts to bridge divides, inspire change, and bring global recognition to the talents and stories of our nation.

The government and people of South Africa join in celebrating this monumental achievement with Dr Kani.
