The fourth edition of the Betway SA20 confirmed the tournament’s growing stature as one of the most compelling franchise leagues in world cricket, delivering sold out crowds, high quality performances and a festive atmosphere that sustained momentum from Boxing Day through to a gripping final at Newlands.
Season four culminated in Sunrisers Eastern Cape securing a third title in four seasons, edging Pretoria Capitals by six wickets in a dramatic last over finish. A capacity Newlands crowd witnessed a final of outstanding intensity, shaped first by Dewald Brevis’ superb 101 for the Capitals and then by an unbroken 114 run partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke that carried the Sunrisers home. Stubbs’ match winning contribution crowned an impressive first season as captain and underlined the depth and composure within the champions’ squad.
Beyond the final, the tournament was marked by consistently strong cricket across all teams. The league produced four centuries in a single season for the first time, including two from MI Cape Town opener Ryan Rickelton, who continued his dominance as the competition’s leading run scorer across all seasons. Shai Hope registered the highest individual score in SA20 history, while Brevis’ final century was widely regarded as one of the finest innings seen in the league.
Individual excellence was a defining feature throughout the month. Quinton de Kock enjoyed a standout campaign with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, finishing as the leading run scorer with 390 runs and earning both MVP and Batter of the Season honours.
His resurgence with bat and gloves symbolised the platform the league now provides for elite players to rediscover and refine their craft. Ottneil Baartman reinforced his reputation as the competition’s premier bowler, topping the wicket charts with 20 scalps and producing the only five wicket haul of the season alongside a historic hat trick. Sikandar Raza emerged as a crowd favourite at Paarl Royals, excelling as an all rounder, while Sherfane Rutherford’s power hitting was central to Pretoria Capitals’ run to the final.
The Betway SA20 Team of the Tournament reflected the balance and competitiveness of the league, captained by Aiden Markram and featuring established internationals alongside emerging talents such as Rising Star Jordan Hermann and teenage quick Nqobani Mokoena.
Their inclusion highlighted the league’s growing role in player development, a point emphasised by League Commissioner Graeme Smith, who pointed to the visible progression of players like Brevis, Stubbs and Breetzke since the inaugural season.
Off the field, the competition continued to strengthen its foundations. Near capacity crowds across venues, a tightly contested group stage decided on the final day and innovations such as the league’s first Super Over illustrated both commercial appeal and sporting depth. The mega auction ahead of the season was widely credited with improving competitive balance, while discussions around future expansion remain cautious, with logistical considerations and venue availability central to any long term plans.
In its fourth season, the Betway SA20 combined spectacle with substance. Thrilling finishes, breakout performances and sustained public engagement reinforced the sense that the league is not only entertaining but increasingly meaningful within South African cricket and the global T20 landscape.
