SA Police Services in Kwazulu-Natal are investigating an attempted assasination of a SARS Advocate, Coreth Naudé, who was critically injured in a shooting by unknown attackers in Umhlanga,Durban North.

Fullview has learnt that Naudé was arriving at her hotel parking lot in Durban North, near the Gateway shopping centre, on Thursday afternoon when two gunmen opened fire, shot her three times in the upper body, neck and face.

Gareth Naidoo of KZN VIP Protection Services said members were patrolling when they heard gunshots ring out.

“Officers responded swiftly to the scene and assessed the patient. It is reported that a vehicle was entering a parking lot at a local hotel, when gunmen opened fire at them from a nearby vehicle.

“They fired and the passenger was wounded. Suspects then fled in a silver Toyota Corolla. KZNVIP Medics together with Netcare911 and IPSS Medical Rescue were on scene and worked to stabilise the critically injured patient before rushing them to a medical facility for further care,” Naidoo said.

He said that police were also on scene and investigations were under way.

The shooting comes a day after four suspected hitmen, linked to the construction mafia, were killed in a shootout with police in Sydenham on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile the Commissioner for the South African Revenue Service Edward Kieswetter has condemned in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination of Naude.

Kieswetter has described the attack as an act of intimidation saying Sars officials will not be deterred.

Sars calls on our law enforcement agencies to act with speed in pursuing and arresting those who attempted to take a life of Advocate Naude. Sars wishes Advocate Naude speedy recovery and wish her family well. We will not be intimidated by such acts of crime and cowardice,” Kieswetter said.

Naude was reportedly working with Sars in a tax inquiry matter involving a controversial businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, her company, Royal AM Football Club, and other entities when she was shot.

Fullview understands Mkhize owes the South African Revenue Service (SARS) more than R37 million in unpaid taxes.

This is not the first time the soccer boss has been accused of failing to pay her taxes.

In 2020, SARS successfully obtained a liquidation order against her cleaning company for owing more than R200,000 in unpaid taxes.

Mkhize secured much of her wealth from multiple government tenders to build low-cost housing in Kwazulu-Natal.

But details of her riches and investigations by the taxman and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) into her business dealings have been laid bare in newspaper reports, dating back to 2013.

She is now facing fresh accusations of outstanding taxes by SARS.

The tax collector has launched an execution application to attach 13 of Mkhize’s vehicles, including a Lamborghini and Rolls Royce owned by Shandi Trust and her soccer team.

If the order is granted, all vehicles belonging to the Shandi Trust, a company wherein Mkhize is the main shareholder, must be delivered to SARS.

Meanwhile Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) has called the shooting Naudé a “direct assault on the principles of justice”, saying it condemns the incident in the strongest possible terms.

“This brutal act of violence is an attack not only on Advocate Naudé, but also on the rule of law and the integrity of our legal system,” a statement from LHR read.

Attempts to intimidate and harm those who uphold the law will not be tolerated in a democratic society. LHR stands in solidarity with Advocate Naude, her family, and SARS during this difficult time.”

The organisation said it echoes the call for law enforcement to act swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to book.

“No individual or group is above the law, and it is imperative that those responsible for this crime are apprehended and held accountable.”

LHR wished Naudé a speedy recovery and extended its support to family and colleagues.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as the Hawks) has since taken over the investigation involving the attempted assasination of Naude.
