As the referee got proceedings underway, Chiefs and Sekhukhune began the feeling-out process with a battle for the ball in midfield. After 10 minutes played, it was Babina Noko who was the more progressive side as they strung passing sequences together.
Amakhosi created the first notable goal scoring opportunity of the game and nearly profited from a well-worked free-kick routine shortly before the 20 minute mark. In an attempt to catch the Glamour Boys on the break, Sekhukhune swiftly made their way up the pitch in a counter-attacking move but failed to make the most of their opportunity.
With 30 minutes on the clock, the possession statistics were shared between Amakhosi and Babina Noko as the game reached a tacky period of no real goal scoring chances being manufactured.
Chiefs were reduced to hitting Sekhukune on the break for much of the first half and looked threatening on their right-hand flank, as Keegan Dolly and Reeve Frosler continued to find space to run into.
That said, the referee called time on the first 45 as Chiefs and Sekhukhune were unable to break the deadlock.
In breaking the deadlock, Sekhukhune capitalised on a crucial error inside the Glamour Boys half and took the lead in the 48th minute. Finding himself one-on-one with Khune, Mncube calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
With an hour of football played, Sekhukhune grew in confidence and often had Chiefs chasing the ball in midfield. As a result, Arthur Zwane’s troops struggled to make way in the Babina Noko half.
Amakhosi recorded a couple of attempts on goal after the 70th minute, with Edmilson Dowe and Zwane having a go at Sangare from range. Sekhukhune, however, remained solid under pressure and warded off Chiefs’ waves of attacks.
After enduring endless attacks from the home team, Sekhukhune held on to record an eventful 1-0 win over Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.
