The memorial for the gamechanger, entertainment entrepreneur, seasoned chef and celebrated author Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane will take place at a special send-off ceremony on Thursday, 16th February 2023 at Sacred Heart College in Observatory, Johannesburg.
Tibz was shot dead on Friday evening with his lifelong friend, rapper AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, outside Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Durban.
ALS paramedic Garrith Jamieson explained that just after 10.15pm on Friday night they responded to a shooting incident where two men sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
“On arrival, paramedics met total chaos and a scene where two men, believed to be in their late 30s, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics assisted the men and unfortunately the first male showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.”
He said a second male, believed to be Tibz was found in critical condition and died despite advanced life support intervention due to extensive injuries.
Close friends, family and selected media will gather for the special tribute which will be live-streamed.
His funeral will take place at a private ceremony over the weekend.
The Motsoane family are deeply moved by the national outpouring of love and support over the past few days. Financial contributions are welcomed by the family at this time.
Born in Katlegong, a township 35km east of Johannesburg, the brand strategist and The Colour of Wine: Tasting Change’ author had always been an ambassador for good food and good wine.
Before his transition to being a chef, Tibz was in the music business and ran a company called Showlove, one of South Africa’s longest-running hip hop events companies.
ShowLove styled itself as “The Creators of Cool”, and has been setting trends and building brands since 2006.
His managerial skills were praised particularly in the early stages of AKA’s career when the rapper released hit songs such as Victory Lap. He also helped and managed fellow rapper Reason (real name Sizwe Moeketsi) at his peak in the Hip Hop game.
Over time, Tibz would focus on his love for the culinary and wine industry from 2016, and he would grace magazine covers pushing black creatives in that field.
He released a cookbook, The Colour of Wine: Tasting Change‘ in 2018 and his first own wine venture Atelier.
The core focus of the cookbook was to tell the personal stories of black winemakers, chefs, sommeliers, “drinkers and connoisseurs, showing how something as fundamental and earthy as wine becomes a taste of what our new world could be,”
