Shabnim Ismail, 37-year-old quick who retired in 2023, will make a surprise return to international cricket at the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.
The decision follows a persistent and public pursuit by Proteas head coach Mandla Mashimbyi, who had consistently maintained that the ‘door remained open’ for the veteran.
Ismail’s return addresses a critical void in South Africa’s pace department, which has struggled to find a consistent partner for Marizanne Kapp since the 2023 final at Newlands.
South Africa, who were runners-up at the past two Women’s T20 World Cups, open their campaign against Australia on 13 June before facing Pakistan, India, the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
They recently enjoyed a 4-1 series win against ODI world champions India.
“Having someone like Shabnim back adds a lot of value to the group,” said Mashimbyi.
“We had good conversations and you could see the hunger she still has to represent South Africa and help this team achieve something special.”
Since retiring from the Proteas, she has cemented her status as the fastest bowler in the history of the women’s game. During the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL), she shattered records by clocking 132.1 km/h (82.1 mph) for the Mumbai Indians, the first time a female bowler has officially breached the 130 km/h barrier.
South Africa women’s convenor of selectors Clinton du Preez added: “Keeping the core of the group together was important to us because this is a squad that has built strong experience, combinations and understanding over time. At the same time, we also looked at areas where we felt additional experience and impactful options could strengthen the team, especially in the high-pressure moments that often decide tournaments of this nature.”
