Long-serving Mamelodi Sundowns Communications Manager Alex Shakoane was fondly remembered by football stars and colleagues during memorial service at the IAG Church in Mamelodi.
Shakoane has died aged 74, the club announced his passing on Sunday evening.
He served Sundowns since its formative years in the 1970s.
Chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns Tlhopie Motsepe said that Alex Shakoane will be missed dearly by the club and its supporters.
“The Motsepe family, the Board, the Supporters, and all the members of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family mourn and are deeply saddened by the passing of Alex” Goldfinger” Shakoane whom we all loved dearly. Bra Alex’s life was all about Mamelodi Sundowns and we will miss his unique contributions and larger-than-life personality.”
“He served this club with distinction, and he had a special relationship with my father who insisted that I call him Uncle Alex.”
Shakoane’s cause of death is yet to be revealed to the public.
Many speakers talked about the impact that Shakoane had on them during his time in football.
“He saw something in me that I did not see in myself as a young player with the juniors,” said former Sundowns captain Daniel “Mambush” Mudau.
“He told me that he wanted to make me a star and he made sure that I played professional football.”
Sundowns official Daisy Kgopa, who worked closely with Shakoane said she learnt a lot from him.
“I know a lot of things because of Bra Alex, I worked closely with him, and I appreciate everything that he taught me.”
The memorial service was attended by dignitaries such as Safa president Danny Jordaan, Sundowns legends Alex Bapela, Teko Modise and Tiyani Mabunda.
As a loyal servant of Mamelodi Sundowns, Shakoane contributed his skills, knowledge, and passion to the growth of the team. He was deeply involved in various aspects of the club, including coaching, mentoring young players, and supporting the overall vision and mission of Sundowns.
Shakoane’s love for Mamelodi Sundowns was evident in his unwavering commitment and dedication. He became an integral part of the Sundowns family and played a crucial role in shaping the team’s identity and culture.
Beyond his involvement with Sundowns, Shakoane’s influence extended beyond the club’s boundaries. He made significant contributions to football in Mamelodi, Tshwane, and South Africa as a whole. His expertise and guidance helped nurture young talent, inspire aspiring footballers, and foster a love for the game in the community.
Throughout his journey with Sundowns and his contributions to football, Shakoane left an indelible mark on the sport.
