The law enforcements agencies says they have managed to bring the situation back under control in Protea Glen in Soweto.
JMPD Spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, says officers from JMPD, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic Police are currently monitoring a protest action by E-hailing drivers at the Protea Mall.
“Currently there isn’t any disruption to traffic and officers will continue to monitor the protest, said Fihla.”
Earlier, police had to fire teargas and rubber bullets to disperse a group of E-hailing service drivers who had barricaded roads with their vehicles and disrupting the flow of traffic in the area.
They were protesting after an E-hailing motor vehicle was set alight outside the Protea Glen Shopping Mall in Soweto, last night.
This is the latest incident in an ongoing battle between minibus taxi drivers and e-hailing operators.
Three vehicles were also set alight last week Thursday at Maponya Mall.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the car was parked at Protea Glen Mall when three unknown men armed with firearms approached the driver.
“They ordered the victim out of the vehicle before torching it. The victim’s cell phone was also taken. No suspects arrested as yet as police investigations continue.”
Meanwhile, Johannesburg MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene is expected to meet with station commanders of all the police stations in Soweto, with all representatives from Maponya Mall, in an attempt to calm the situation.
