Coventry and Southampton have been charged by the FA following a scuffle sparked by Frank Lampard at the end of their 1-1 draw last Saturday.
As Lampard walked onto the pitch after the game, He sarcastically waved a thumbs up at home supporters – enraging Saints players.
The situation quickly escalated, with several players from both teams pushing, shoving and angrily exchanging words.
The draw meant Coventry missed the opportunity to go eight points clear at the top of the Championship.
An FA statement on the matter read: “Southampton and Coventry have been charged following their Championship fixture on Saturday December 20.
“It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area staff did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way after the final whistle.
The clubs have until Tuesday, 30 December to respond to the charges.
Lampard went on to say sorry for his role in the ruckus – but felt that he too was due an apology.
“I apologise for my language, and maybe that stand will apologise for their language.”
“I’m well and truly over that one and it got a bit heated but sometimes you take that 99 minutes and you’re hanging on and seeing the players do what they do, and I feel I live it with them.”
