Stellebosch FC returned to winning ways in style in the Betway Premiership as they hammered AmaZulu FC 5-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Thursday night.
The emphatic victory saw Stellies climb up to the seventh spot in the league standings and coach Steve Barker’s side will be looking to make it back-to-back wins when they host Kruger United in the Nedbank Cup on 28 January.
Usuthu, on the other hand, slipped down to the 10th spot in the standings after suffering an embarrassing defeat.
Co-coaches Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi will be eager to ensure that the team returns to winning ways against Mighty Eagles in the Nedbank Cup on 28 January.
The two teams struggled to create clear-cut chances in the opening exchanges, but this changed after the half-hour mark.
Khomotjo Lekoloane was afforded space to beat goalkeeper Veli Mothwa with a low shot to hand Stellenbosch a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
Mothwa then became a very busy man between the sticks. The Bafana Bafana international made three saves to deny Andre De Jong, Chumani Butsaka and Ashley Cupido between the 41st minute and 44th minute.
Stellenbosch were leading 1-0 at the interval.
Stellies ran riot after the restart as Devin Titus made it 2-0 after being set up by the lively Butsaka in the 57th minute.
The goal rattled the AmaZulu defence as Butsaka put his name on the scoresheet on the hour-mark to make it 3-0 to the visitors.
Titus continued to be a constant threat to Usuthu’s defence and he grabbed his brace in the 66th minute to make it 4-0.
The 5-0 victory was sealed by Ibraheem Olalekan Jabaar who netted in the 80th minute with Mothwa well-beaten.
Meanwhile Royal AM have had their fixtures suspended after the club failed to guarantee they would be able to continue their obligations in the current Premier Soccer League season, the league announced on Wednesday.
Elsewhere Mamelodi Sundowns claimed revenge over Magesi FC and opened a six-point lead at the top of the Betway Premiership with a 2-1 triumph at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Pietersburg on Wednesday night and Kaizer Chiefs also returned to winning ways as they edged 10-man Sekhukhune United 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
