Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal down to defeat RB Leipzig 3-1 in the inaugural RedBull Diski Last Namba at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.
Leipzig are in South Africa for their historic “RE KAOFELA” (“All Together”) post-season tour from May 26–30, 2026.
The historic visit to the Rainbow Nation marked the first time the German club toured the African continent. The tour was a blend of high-level sport, local cultural immersion, and community fan engagements.
Leipzig started the game a brighter side, building from the back all the way to the final third.
There was no surprise when the visitors took a deserved lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a rocket from Samba Konate heading into the half-time tunnel leading 1-0.
The home side finally got their goal with 15 minutes to go when Leipzig defenders were caught napping and Tashreeq Matthews teed-up Brayan Leon for a cool finish.
Sundowns defied the odds two minutes to full-time and grabbed the lead when an inch-perfect cross by Nuno Santos picked out Leon who back-heeled in off the far post to complete his brace.
The young Bennet Mokoena certainly left a lasting impression on the fans with his display and well-taken goal to round off the scoring in stoppage time to seal a comeback win.
Meanwhile Sundowns released an official statement on Friday afternoon, expressing their delight at retaining the services of the Bafana Bafana international Themba Zwane.
“Our Captain Themba Zwane has signed a new contract, extending his journey with Mamelodi Sundowns. Here’s to writing more history in Yellow!” the club announced.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Zwane expressed his gratitude to the club’s hierarchy and reiterated his hunger for more silverware.
“I would like to thank the club’s chairman [Tlhopie Motsepe], and president [Dr. Patrice Motsepe], as well as the staff for this opportunity that you have given me,” Zwane said.
“I really appreciate it. You know the love I have for the team. I will continue to push myself and the guys and try to win trophies.”
With over 400 appearances across all competitions since joining Sundowns in 2011, Zwane has cemented his legacy as one of their most decorated, longest-serving players.
