SuperSport United proved too strong for Sekhukhune United in a PSL clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Friday night as they emerged as 3-1 winners.
The win is their fifth of the season and sees them occupying third spot on the table.
The home team started well and controlled the flow of play. They came close to scoring in the 10th minute when Bradley Grobler met a cross from Patrick Maswanganyi, but his header from eight yards out shaved the wrong side of the post.
SuperSport did open the scoring five minutes later, this time Grobler making no mistake when he powerfully head home a pinpoint cross from Jamie Webber.
Sekhukhune started to find their feet in the game after going behind and nearly drew level in the 24th minute. Victor Letsoalo let fly with a thunderbolt from just outside the box, but his effort was well-saved by goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.
Goss was in the thick of the action again ten minutes later, this time producing an acrobatic save to deny Nyiko Mobbie from the edge of the 18-yard area.
SuperSport, though, took the game by the scruff of the neck three minutes before the break when they doubled their lead. Some swift build-up play concluded with Thatayaone Ditlhokwe finding the back of the net from 14-yards out.
The half ended 2-0 in favour of the home team.
It was more of the same at the start of the second half with SuperSport dominating proceedings.
In the 54th minute Webber came close to finding his side’s third goal, but his 22-yard shot from a difficult angle only struck the post.
Five minutes later, however, and the home side did score their third goal when Grobler, turned provider, played Thamsanqa Gabuza through on goal and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat.
In the 64th minute, Sekhukhune were able to pull a goal back when Victor Letsoalo found substitute Thamsanqa Masiya unmarked inside the box, and he dully turned the ball into the net from ten yards out.
Sekhukhune tried to find their way back into the match after that, but it was to no avail as they slumped to their fourth loss of the league season which leaves them in 13th place on the table.
