Supersport United secured their place in the top-flight next season, playing to a 1-1 draw in the resumption of their Premiership fixture against Golden Arrows at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The score was 1-1 at half time, with SuperSport’s fourth minute opener from Christian Saile cancelled out by a 24th-minute equaliser from Velemseni Ndwandwe for Arrows.
The match was temporarily halted midway through the first half when the floodlights failed due to load shedding, but was then resumed and taken to the half-time break under natural light conditions.
SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss played his part in securing survival, making two crucial saves from three shots faced. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Poggenpoel continued to show his value in attack, recording his second assist of the campaign—the most for SuperSport United. Arrows’ Sbonelo Cele similarly stood out, registering his third assist of the season, leading his team in that regard.
While SuperSport avoided relegation, their form in the run-in was troubling, finishing the season winless in their last four games (D1 L3) and securing just one win in their final 11 (D5 L5). Golden Arrows fared little better, managing just one victory in their last nine outings (D4 L4), ultimately falling short of a top-eight finish.
Cape Town City now faces the relegation play-offs, becoming the fourth team from the Western Cape to enter this battle after Vasco Da Gama (2010-11), Santos (2011-12), and Chippa United (2012-13). History does not favour Western Cape teams in this predicament—all previous entrants have suffered relegation, with Cape Town Spurs enduring two drops (2017-18 and 2023-24).
Fullview learnt that City might approach the court to challenge the delayed resumption of the match between Superport and Arrows, according to the PSL handbook, they match should have played within 48 hours.
