A 30-year-old drug mule from Namibia is currently under police guard in hospital following her arrest at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) on Sunday.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Antlenda Mathe says they were following up on intelligence from SAPS that a drug mule would land in Johannesburg on an early morning flight from Sau Paulo.
She says the woman was making her way through immigration when a medical X-ray confirmed and detected foreign objects in her stomach.
Brigadier Mathe says she was taken to the hospital where she was given medicine to expel the drugs.
She says so far the woman released 63 bullets suspected to be filled with cocaine.
Police cannot yet determine the value of the drugs until all have been expelled from her body.
Brigadier Mathe says they do suspect that she could be part of a much bigger syndicate.
She says in the last two months 10 drug mules have been arrested at ORTIA and drugs valued at over R30 million seized.
The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service(SAPS), General Fannie Masemola has applauded the vigilance of the multidisciplinary team working tirelessly to clamp down on criminality at the OR TAMBO International Airport.
