Suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in CIT in Soweto.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) responded to a cash-in-transit robbery at the corner of Machaba and  Zulu drive, next to Eyethu Mall in Mofolo Village, Soweto.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brenda Muridili, “It is alleged that a cash van was rammed by a gold Mercedes-Benz sedan. The driver and crew were disarmed and their firearms were taken, with no injuries reported.

“Explosives were used to access the cash. An unknown amount of money was taken by a group of unknown suspects, who fled the scene, said Muridili.

“Crime scene Management and other role players attended the scene.”

Muridili added, investigations are continuing, and more arrests are expected as the manhunt intensifies.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics for the fourth quarter (January to March) of the 2025/2026 financial year released in mid-2026, cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies stood at 31 recorded incidents nationally, reflecting a slight decline from 35 cases in the previous comparison period.

Meanwhile SAPS intercepted a consignment of cocaine worth an estimated R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport.

The seizure was made on Friday, 31 July 2026, during an intelligence-driven operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), Customs officials and Menzies Aviation personnel.

No arrests have been made.

According to police, the investigations are continuing to identify those responsible for the attempted smuggling operation and to trace the intended recipients of the drugs.
