South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that a heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected over Gauteng, the western highveld of Mpumalanga, central and western parts of Limpopo and the eastern parts of both the North West and the Free State until Friday.

Forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng said the hot conditions are expected to persist until Friday.

Mofokeng advised residents to keep hydrated and ensure that they were in cooler areas.

The heatwave is also likely to put pressure on the electricity grid as Eskom battles to keep the lights on juggling the load shedding schedule between Stage 2 and Stage 3.

City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department has urged residents to take extra precautions amid a heatwave in the city.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the heatwave may cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Mabaso said residents must stay hydrated by drinking copious amounts of water among other precautionary measures.

The City of Johannesburg EMS has also issued an alert about extremely hot temperatures on Wednesday (33°C), urging residents to stay hydrated, drink lots of water and avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm. Those working directly in sunlight are urged to take regular breaks and to look out for veld fires.

“Exposure to these extremely hot temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and heat cramps which might lead to heat stroke. Residents are urged to exercise caution while conducting daily activities,” the metro said.
