Moses Tarakinyu and Fortunate Chidzivo claimed the top spot in the men’s and woman’s categories at Saturday’s Totalsports Two Oceans 21km Half Marathon.
The Half Marathon was added to the event in 1998 and attracts a sold-out field year on year.
South Africa’s Elroy Gelant, the defending champion from 2019 after the 2020 and 2021 editions of the race were scrapped as a result of Covid-19, finished second.
The men’s winner Tarakinyu, crossed the finish line after 21.1 km in a time of 1:03:31, just 1.55 seconds ahead of Gelant.
Another South Africa, Desmond Mokgobu, came third and the top three were engaged in a thrilling fight to the finish line.
In the women’s race, Chidzivo gave Zimbabwe the double when she won in 1:14:49 in far more dominant fashion.
Chidzivo finished a staggering 25 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Kore Tamiru Gelaye while another Zimbabwean in Caroline Mhandu cam third.
South Africa’s best finishers were Laura Labuschangne (4th) an Stella Marais (6th).
What is the Two Oceans Marathon?
Two Oceans Marathon is a traditional Cape Town city running event. It’s considered the world’s most beautiful marathon. It’s one of the prominent events in Cape Town.
It is the 51st edition of the event. The race first went underway in 1970. And since then, the Two Ocean Marathon has become one of the most popular running events in the world.
The Ultra Marathon consists of 56 km of running track which starts from Main Road corner Dean Street, Newlands, and finishes at the finish line is UCT rugby Fields, Upper Campus, Rondebosch. The Two Ocean Half marathon race is 21.1 km starting from Main Road corner Dean Street, Newlands, and finishing at the UCT rugby Fields, Upper Campus, Rondebosch.
Two Oceans Marathon 2022 Schedule
The Two Oceans Marathon is set for two days from April Saturday, 16, and Sunday, 17 April 2022. On the first day, Two Ocean Half Marathon will take place. And on the second day, April 17, the two ocean 56 km run begins.
Route
Two Oceans Marathon always takes place at the same route every year. Newlands is the beginning point of the race, and the whole track is like a circle.Participants run through Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, over Chapman’s Peak and Constantia Nek, and eventually, finish at the University of Cape Town campus.
