Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed on Friday evening the signing of South African forward Tashreeq Matthews from Swedish side Sirius IK.
Matthews joined Sirius in 2022, having previously been at Varberg, also in the Swedish Allsvenkan.
“Sirius football and the South African club Mamelodi Sundowns … agree on the transfer of Tashreeq Matthews, “read a statement on the club’s official website.
“I would like to say thank you to the entire Sirius family for these one and a half years, it has been a wonderful time,” said Matthews.
A product of the Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) academy, Matthews joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019, and has been in Europe ever since, having his greatest success in Sweden.
Now, it remains to be seen if Sundowns can also bring the transfer of Orlando Pirates’ winger Thembinkosi Lorch over the line.
Sundowns have already strengthened their star-studded squad in January with the signing of Matías Esquivel from Argentine outfit Club Atlético Lanús and defender Zuko Mdunyelwa, who joined the club in December 2023 from Chuppa United.
