Al Ahly and Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau was honoured at the 2023 CAF Awards after his African Football League (AFL) exploits for his club.

Tau finished the campaign with five goals and five assists, making him the player with the most goal contributions.

He was competing against Mamelodi Sundowns star Peter Shalulile as well as Pyramids’ Fiston Mayele.

The previous winner of the award was Tau’s Al Ahly teammate, Mohamed El-Shenawy. Two other notable goalkeeping winners were Denis Onyango in 2016 and Vincent Enyeama in 2004.

Another Al Ahly player holds the record for the most Interclub Player of the Year awards. Mohamed Aboutrika won the accolade in 2006, 2008 and back-to-back in 2012 and 2013, as per CAF.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis was crowned Women’s Coach of the Year, while Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies won African Women’s Club of the Year at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco.
