Acclaimed South African actor Presley Chweneyagae, best known for his portrayal of Cobra on 1Magic’s The River, has died aged 40.
The details surrounding his death are still unknown.
A statement shared by his agency MLA on Tuesday confirmed that the veteran actor died on Tuesday at the age of 40.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, extended family, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him. While we grieve the immense loss of a remarkable talent, we celebrate the light he brought to the world. Details regarding memorial services will be shared in due course,” read the statement.
Chweneyagae rose to prominence when he secured a role on Tsotsi starring among actors Terry Pheto, Mothusi Magano, Kenneth Nkosi and Own Sejake.
This would see him secure even greater roles starring in movies like iNumber Number Jozi Gold, Zama Zama and more recently on The River.
The role also earned him his first Golden Horn at the first SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards) in 2006.
In 2020 he scooped the gong for outstanding lead actor at the fourth Royalty Soapie Awards.
In early 2025, he starred in a new 13-episode drama series, Cobrizi, reaffirming his enduring appeal. His performances often drew from his own life, having overcome a challenging upbringing in Soweto, which lent authenticity to his work and inspired countless aspiring actors.
South African government paid tribute to Chweneyagae, lauding his outstanding contribution to the film, television and theatre fraternity.
“The nation mourns the loss of a gifted storyteller whose talent lit up our screens and hearts,” the government said in a post on X. “Your legacy will live on through the powerful stories you told.”
The South Africa Film and Television Awards organization, known as Safta, paid tribute to Chweneyagae, calling him a “true legend of South African Cinema” on X.
“Rest in Power … a powerhouse performer whose talent left an indelible mark on our screens and in our hearts,” Safta posted.
The secretary general of the ANC, Fikile Mbalula described Chweneyagae as a “giant of South African film and theatre”.
“His legacy in Tsotsi, The River, and beyond will live on. Condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his brilliance,” Mbalula said.
Acting North West Premier Kenetswe Mosenogi joined the chorus of tributes for the Mahikeng-born actor.
The acting premier described Chweneyagae’s death as a tragic loss that would leave a void in the hearts of those in the industry he loved.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of creativity and passion he gifted to us all. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,” she added.
The North West Provincial Government says it will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a dignified send-off for the actor and support his family.
