Three people were killed and twelve others were left seriously injured after a bus plunged off a bridge in Tongaat, Kwazulu-Natal (KZN), on Tuesday morning.
According to IPSS Medical Rescue, a fully-laden bus veered off the Tongaat River bridge.
So far, three people have been confirmed deceased, and 12 people are seriously injured.
Spokesperson for IPSS Medical Rescue Samantha Meyrick said one of the seriously injured passengers are being extricated by the fire department.
“There are an unknown number of patients with minor injuries.”
The R102 has been closed to allow full access for rescue and emergency services. Motorists travelling in the area – particularly along Gopalall Hurbans Road – are advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes where possible.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Sindy Msimang said officials have been combing the scene.
Msimang said, from where he’s standing, the tyres of the vehicle they look okay. So, we can rule out that it could be the tyre burst, and he is just speculating. “It could happen that he lost control, but then we have to get further details with regards to that.”
