SuperSport United have confirmed that midfielder Teboho Mokoena has joined Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mokoena makes the move for an undisclosed fee, which is believed to be a record for a transfer between two DStv Premiership clubs.
“Teboho has served our club with distinction since joining us in his mid teens,” SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews said. “He has helped us win four major trophies and has consistently delivered on and off the field of play, which is why our Chairman Khulu Sibiya gave his blessing for this move.
“He has made us proud by representing South Africa from Under-17 to the Under-23 Olympics team and now Bafana Bafana. He was PSL Young Player of the Year and is a fantastic role model for young players to follow in how to manage a professional career in sport.
“As a young man he gives generously of his money and his time to the communities from where he grew up. He will remain a special son of our club alongside special names like Kamohelo Mokotjo, Daine Klate, Kermit Erasmus and Ronwen Williams.
“While we are obviously very sad to lose him as a player, we are delighted for him that he has earned himself a big move to a great club and wish him the best of luck at this crossroads in his career.”
Mokoena made over 150 appearances for Matsatsantsa and had also courted interest from Belgian side Anderlecht.
Meanwhile Cape Town City have confirmed the departure of defender Abbubaker Mobara, who has signed for fellow DStv Premiership side AmaZulu.
The surprise switch will see Mobara reunite with coach Benni McCarthy after the pair spent the first half of the 2019/20 campaign together at City.
The 27-year-old can play at right-back, centre-back or as a defensive midfielder, and adds strength in a number of areas for AmaZulu as they prepare for the CAF Champions League group stages.
“City bids farewell to Abbubaker Mobara, who joins AmaZulu FC. We wish ‘Bara’ all the best in the next phase of his career,” City said on Thursday.
Mobara made 53 appearances in his two-and-a-half seasons at the club. His final game was against Swallows last month when he received a red card in a 2-1 win. He must still serve the second game of that suspension.
Elsewhere Sekhukhune United have completed the signing of Zambia international Roderick Kabwe, who returns to South Africa after a spell at home with MTN Super League side Zanaco.
The 29-year-old previously turned out for Ajax Cape Town and Black Leopards in the DStv Premiership, making 104 appearances and scoring 17 goals between the clubs.
He will add to the attacking options of the Premiership new-boys, who have had a solid start to the 2021/22 season.
“I am here to strengthen the team, as we know the team has been doing well and given this opportunity I must do my job, which is creating, or if the opportunity comes, to score, and then to defend well,”Kabwe said.
“People will expect the team to do even more in the second round and I want to help the team to be stronger going forward.
“I would like to thank the board, coaches and players for welcoming me. It has been long coming, the coaches wanted me before the end of last season, but something happened. Finally I am here to join the family.”
