Two lanes on the M1 South after Smit Street in Braamfontein are closed after a cable fire broke out under the overpass.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba says three fire engines are at the scene.
“The situation is under control, and we’re trying to ensure that the fire doesn’t spread to other areas,” Radebe said.
Radebe added that once the firefighters have conducted an assessment along the M1 double decker underground tunnel and the area is safe, the scene will be handed over to City Power to conduct their investigation.

City Power says this has led to a power outage in Braamfontein and nearby areas.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by yet another incident of suspected cable theft and vandalism, a growing trend linked to the criminal activities of zama zamas operating in the inner city underground tunnels, “said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
Johannesburg metro police department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said two lanes have been closed.
“Two lanes remain open, which may cause traffic disruptions. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling there. Currently, there is no estimated time for when the fire will be extinguished,” said Fihla.
