Two motorists have been declared dead following a collision involving three trucks and 7 light motor vehicles on the westbound N12 freeway in Bedfordview.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck which was carrying iron steel lost its load.
Metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said traffic would be diverted on the Edenvale off-ramp and the eastbound to the Electron interchange until the scene had been cleared.
Makgato said, upon arrival, the entire freeway was temporarily closed due to the severity of the crash.
The crash resulted in jack-knifed trucks and a chemical spill on the road surface, added Makgato.

Paramedics declared two men, a truck driver and an SUV driver, dead at the scene and the Jaws of Life were employed to extricate the truck driver.
Seven other people were treated for injuries and transported to various hospitals in Ekurhuleni.
The scene remains active as rescue and traffic officers continue accident rehabilitation efforts.
The Edenvale Community Police Forum has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to avoid sharing sensitive content that could cause potential harm.
“Sharing images or details of these incidents without proper context or consideration can perpetuate distress and violate privacy,” the CPF stated.
