Two suspects were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of four people, on Monday at Block P, Jukulyn, a notorious area in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria.
The suspects, aged 30 and 33, are expected to appear in court on Thursday on charges of murder.
In the early hours of Monday morning, police attended to the incident and found four people with gunshot wounds on the street.
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said among the victims was a 14-year-old teenage girl, identified as Vuyolethu Ziwele.
“The circumstances that led to the shooting are unknown at this stage and two suspects have been arrested.”
When Nandipha Ziwele was fetched from work early on New Year’s Day, she was expecting to see her 14-year-old daughter, Vuyolethu, who she had left at home.
However, her heart was shattered when she was met by the scene of a shooting. She found her daughter dead.
“This is painful. She is my only child. It feels like I am sleeping and need to wake up. It feels like a dream,” she said.
The distraught mother said details of the incident were sketchy. She knows her child and friends and family members were lighting fireworks at the gate.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of two suspects believed to be behind the Soshanguve shooting.
Speaking to the media outside the local police station, Lesufi said police are continuing with investigations to determine the motive behind the shooting.
“Police have made a major breakthrough, two of the suspects were arrested in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) and police have indicated to me that they are looking for other suspects. They are quite convinced that after processing and dealing with the matter with those arrested they will know the motive behind this attack.”
