Umhlobo Wenene radio personality Nomonde “Smondz” Patience Vakalisa,, (47) has died on Wednesday morning at Addington Hospital in Durban.
SABC business manager Loyiso Bala for the Eastern Cape Combo, made the announcement on the station’s show Khanya Gqiyazana.
Bala said further details would be communicated in due course.
Nomonde’s dynamic radio career began with her hosting the Top 30 chart show, Izikhokho Zomzantsi.
Her vibrant personality bloomed as she co-hosted the Break-a-Slice-fast breakfast show with “Slyso” in 2009.
In 2023, she stepped up as the main anchor of Ngenani Emasangweni Ngendumiso, continuing to uplift her audience.
In 2024, she took charge of Beka Ithemba Lakho Kuye after Reverand Rweqana’s retirement.
Nomonde also captivated TV audiences on SABC2’s Ichibi Lendumiso, exploring Christian worship across various denominations.
In a Facebook post, Vakalisa’s family described her as a “devoted servant of God, a loving leader and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her”.
The family said funeral and memorial service arrangements would be announced soon.
