In light of the successful awarding of the court interdict, a decision was taken to resume contact classes on Monday, 4 March 2024 at the Hatfield Campus, University of Pretoria said.
The university moved classes at its Hatfield campus to online due to the ongoing strike by workers affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu).
Physical classes were suspended after police fired rubber bullets and stun granades to disperse striking workers last week.
Staff downed tools more than two weeks ago following a deadlock in negotiations between Nehawu and the university over wage increases.
Nehawu declared a dispute in November after the university made a final offer of 4%.
The union’s demands include a 7% increase, a 13th cheque, and a once-off bonus.
UP’s Rikus Delport said the safety of students remains a priority.
“Following the successful awarding of the court interdict, which we trust will prevent striking workers from disrupting university operations, contact classes will resume on 4 March 2024 at the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria.
“We are confident that normal teaching and learning activities will proceed smoothly. It is our firm belief that the University of Pretoria students deserve uninterrupted educational experience, and we are committed to ensuring the wellbeing of our students and staff.”
