The new Volkswagen Golf R has taken its time coming to South Africa, but now VW South Africa has confirmed that it’ll hit showrooms on 25 April 2023.

Priced at R912 800, the local launch of this flagship model was delayed by production constraints brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the consequent parts shortage crisis.

“Production constraints and parts shortages severely derailed our launch plans, but we are excited to finally extend the performance range in South Africa with the introduction of the new Golf 8 R, “said the head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Steffen Knapp.

The Golf 8 R joins the Golf GTI and the Tiguan R as Volkswagen’s performance derivatives in the South African market.

Since the Golf R’s launch in South Africa in 2007, VW noted that the hatch had sold close to 6,000 units across South Africa, with the new Golf 8 R’s drive technology topping everything launched in the Golf model range thus far.
