It turned out to be a good night for Orlando Pirates who were emphatic winners in Wednesday’s 2021/22 DStv Premiership action.
Pirates beat second-placed Stellenbosch FC 3-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium to move up to seventh.
Deon Hotto played a pivotal role in leading the Buccaneers back to winning ways. The Namibian set up the first for Collins Makgaka before bagging a brace himself.
SuperSport United came from two goals down to hold defending champions and league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-2 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Sundowns looked well on course for another victory following goals from Neo Maema and Peter Shalulile, but were denied by a SuperSport side who also became the first team to score against the defending champions in the league this season.
Gamphani Lungu finally found a way past Denis Onyango before Teboho Mokoena rattled home a free-kick to earn Matsatsantsa a point.
A point, though, was enough to stretch the Brazilians’ lead atop the league standings to six points. SuperSport jumped up to fourth and remain eight points behind their Tshwane rivals.
Elsewhere, AmaZulu FC fought back to hold Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium.
The draw saw Amakhosi climb up to fifth place on the league standings, while Usuthu remained eighth as Bonginkosi Ntuli cancelled out Keagan Buchanan’s own goal.
Both teams ended the game with 10-men with Cole Alexander and Samkelo Magwazela sent off for the Amakhosi and Usuthu respectively.
There was also a red card in Marumo Gallants’ 0-0 draw with Maritzburg United at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Zukile Kewuti was the player who received his marching orders while Marcel Engelhardt denied Thabo Mnyamane from the spot on a frustrating night for Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.
