Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane criticised his players for not sticking to the game plan and allowing Cape Town City to dominate them as they went down for a third time this season in their DStv Premiership clash on Tuesday.
The new coach, who has won two and lost three of his opening five games in charge this season, said he had hatched a plan to counter City’s threat but it was not executed in the clash on a slippery Cape Town Stadium pitch.
“I think we started the game very, very slow, very sluggish,” he said in an analysis of the game, which City won 2-0.
“We allowed them time and space on the board. And we knew that they wanted to drop the ball behind.
“We actually prepared for that,” he insisted.
“I think we gave them that advantage, we were struggling for first 20 to 30 minutes, but I think last 15 minutes of the first half, we got better. So we went to halftime, calmed down, and we had to change the strategy.”
Zwane said Chiefs added another midfielder to outnumber City and try and wrestle control of the ball.
“We tried to force them to come inside so that we could create space for ourselves. And it got better.”
But he said as they were threatening an equaliser after Darwin Gonzalez’ early score, City scored a second through Nathan Fasika. The defender powered home a header from a corner.
“When you’re chasing the game, you can easily concede, so a lapse of concentration from a dead ball was disappointing. As soon as they scored the second one, then we were chasing the game all the time.
“We could have maybe got one back and then put them under pressure, but we still couldn’t take the opportunity. We were not clinical. We’re just not moving enough to free ourselves,” he added.
