Cape Town City have confirmed a contract extension for captain Thami Mkhize that will keep the right-back at the club until June 2024.
The 33-year-old Bafana Bafana international has extended his deal to remain in the Mother City having become the club’s record appearance holder with 158 starts in all competitions since arriving at the team in October 2016.
They were just a few months old at that stage, with only Thabo Nodada in the current squad having been there longer than Mkhize.
“What really impressed me from the first day I joined the club was their ambitions to challenge for honours. As a player you want to play for people who want to win things – cups, leagues and everything,” Mkhize said.
“Here you work to win, you work to win trophies. It is marvellous to be entrusted by the club, the players and everybody involved to lead them. This is the club I should be in.”
Mkhize is likely to be in action when City take on Royal AM in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 on Saturday.
Meanwhile Stellenbosch FC have confirmed the arrivals of two more players, though one is with an eye on the future.
The high-flying DStv Premiership side had already trumpeted the arrival of Venezuelan forward Juan Ortiz last month, but he has been joined at the club by defensive midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
The Ox’ joins from Black Leopards, where he had spent the last 18 months having first emerged at Royal Eagles in the 2019/20 season. He has made 51 appearances for the two clubs and has yet to find the back of the net.
He has been brought in to beef up the defensive shield in front of the back four, while there is another new arrival to add an attacking verve.
Shaun Morgan is just 17 and arrives from Bloemfontein having impressed on trials at the club.He had been set for a move to SuperSport United, but they did not have space in their academy, and he has since been snapped up by Stellies after impressing the coaching staff.
