Kaizer Chiefs continued their impressive form in the Betway Premiership with a 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Magesi FC in Polokwane on Wednesday evening.
Chiefs claimed a fifth successive league victory for the first time since they won eight in a row in the 2019/20 season under Ernst Middendorp, that fateful campaign in which they lost the league title on the final day after drawing 1-1 with Baroka FC.
The visitors got the breakthrough when Magesi defenders allowed Flavio Da Silva to control the ball and turn to shoot past Zimbabwe international goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.
Chiefs grabbed a second goal eight minutes to halftime after Wandile Duba charged in on the right of the six-yard box and dispatched a corner-kick after Chipezeze collided with one of his Magesi teammates while trying to collect the ball.
Mduduzi Shabalala then threw the contest beyond Magesi’s reach when he finished off Reeve Frosler’s feed from the right in the 62nd minute.
However, the hosts pulled one goal back through Diteboho Mofokeng on 69 minutes, but hopes of a successful comeback remained slim.
Substitute Khayisa Mayo retained the three-goal advantage by heading in a beautiful delivery from Frosler with seven minutes remaining.
Chiefs move six points clear of Amazulu in fourth to have a firm grip on third place and CAF Confederation Cup football next season.
They are also now 10 points behind second-placed Orlando Pirates with a game in hand and a clash against The Buccaneers to come on April 26.
