LIV Golf has taken a major step towards securing its future after confirming it has reached an agreement with a lead investor, ending months of uncertainty over the league’s long term survival.

The announcement, made by LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neil at Trump National Bedminster on Wednesday, comes after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund confirmed earlier this year that it would end its financial backing at the close of the 2026 season. The new investment is expected to be finalised in September and is set to usher in a dramatically different era for the breakaway tour.

Most notably, LIV Golf’s players will become the majority equity holders in the league, a move O’Neil described as a first among major global sports competitions. “LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players,” O’Neil said.

“We’re also seeing strong interest from more than a dozen additional parties to potentially serve as minority investors, creating a multi partner model built for long term stability and growth. Notably, our next chapter will make our players the majority equity holders in LIV Golf, a first for a major global sports league, and gives the League the foundation to keep growing the game worldwide.”

The funding deal follows weeks of speculation that LIV was seeking between $250 million and $300 million in fresh investment to continue operating beyond this season.

The restructuring is expected to reshape the competition. Reports indicate the 2027 schedule will be reduced from 14 tournaments to 10, with roughly half staged outside the United States. Tournament purses are also expected to decrease significantly, from the current $30 million events to around $10 million, while players will reportedly be free to compete on other tours when invited.

For South Africa, the news carries significance beyond the balance sheet. LIV Golf has already committed to returning in 2027 after this year’s event proved one of the standout tournaments on the global calendar.

Packed grandstands, a vibrant atmosphere and overwhelming public support turned the tournament into far more than another stop on the schedule. South African fans embraced the event with a passion that exceeded expectations, underlining the country’s growing appetite for world class golf. At a time when LIV Golf is reshaping its future, South Africa has strengthened its case as one of its most valuable destinations.

The announcement came a day after O’Neil met with players, followed by a players only meeting led by Bryson DeChambeau. While few players spoke publicly, veteran Richard Bland admitted the group remains cautiously optimistic. “We’re in this together. We’re fully backing Scott,” Bland said. “I think probably in the next two to three weeks we’ll have a bigger picture. We’re positive with what’s going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward.”

Questions still remain over the remainder of the 2026 season, including uncertainty surrounding the scheduled Team Championship in Michigan, where reports suggest tournament infrastructure has yet to be constructed. LIV Golf has not confirmed whether the event will proceed.

For now, though, the immediate threat hanging over the league appears to have eased. With fresh investment on the horizon and players preparing to take ownership of the competition, LIV Golf’s next chapter will look very different from the one that launched just four years ago.
